Strategy

The Institute has established four ‘pillars’ of activity.

I. Research Programs and Support Activities

The Institute has created three broad knowledge networks which conduct research on policy, management and delivery, and law and justice themes. These networks are comprised of inter-disciplinary scholars and leading practitioners who undertake research that addresses systemic challenges in governance. Current clients include: the ACT government; the Australasian Institute of Justice Administration; the Australian National Audit Office; the European Union; the National Water Commission; and the West Asia and North African Forum.

Institute fellows are currently delivering four ARC research projects on ‘Whole of Government’ (Professor John Halligan), ‘Corporate Governance’ (Professor Meredith Edwards, Professor John Halligan and Dr Geoff Nicoll), ‘Social Inclusion and Exclusion among Australia’s Children’ (Professor Anne Daly with NATSEM), and ‘Developing a responsive regulatory system for small business corporations’ (Professor Phil Lewis).

Recent books published by Institute scholars include: Women and the Law in Australia (LexisNexis, 2010) by Professor Patricia Easteal; The Rudd Government: Australian Commonwealth Administration 2007–2010 (ANU Press, 2010) co-editors Professors Chris Aulich and Mark Evans; Understanding Competition States (Routledge, 2009) and New Directions in the Study of Policy Transfer (Routledge, 2010) by Professor Mark Evans; The Centrelink Experiment (ANU, 2009) and Performance Management in the Public Sector (Routledge, 2010) by Professor John Halligan; and ASEAN Regionalism: cooperation, values and institutionalisation by Dr Chris Roberts. The Institute is also host to the international journal Policy Studies edited by Professor Mark Evans.

II. Professional Development Programs

In the professional development area, the Institute has launched a portfolio of Master of Public Administration (MPA) programs in collaboration with the Australian Public Service Commission, Chartered Secretaries Australia, the Faculty of Education, the Centre for Customs and Excise, the Centre for Public Administration and NATSEM. It also delivers a Graduate Certificate in Public Management for the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

The Institute’s Canberra MPA Program focuses on providing research-led and practice-based education in the critical elements of the international modernizing civil services agenda. This is comparable with the curriculum of the flagship schools of government around the world from which several members of the course team are drawn. Tailored to the needs of modernizing governments and responding to professional development priorities outlined in the Australian Government’s 'Ahead of the Game' report, the Institute’s offerings draw on the experience of leading academics and practitioners. Moreover, the Institute is currently delivering bespoke short course programs for the ACT government, the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Department of Finance and Deregulation, and Treasury.

III. Professional Engagement Programs

The Institute provides a neutral space for bringing together experts from academia, practice and the private sectors to problem-solve on critical governance issues. Our engagement activities include a broad range of seminars, workshops and conferences on governance themes in partnership with the Australian Public Service Commission, the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, Institute of Public Administration Australia, Minter Ellison, the Research School of Social Sciences at the ANU and Treasury. Professor Meredith Edwards and Professor Virginia Haussegger are leading the Institute’s signature professional engagement program  ‘Celebrating the Contribution of Women to public sector excellence’.

IV. Graduate Education Programs

The Institute is a centre for high quality graduate education with the aim of nurturing a new generation of PhD educated scholars and teachers in public management and public policy to meet the national and international skills deficit in this area. We currently have over 100 research students studying for PhDs, DPA and DBA degrees focusing on Australian, comparative and international governance themes.
