Build Back Better: Deliberative Democracy in a post-Haiyan World

Tue 11 August 2015Speaker: Dr Nicole Curato, University of CanberraVenue: Fishbowl, Building 24, University of Canberra

Abstract

This seminar outlines the research agenda for my current project on deliberative democracy in a world risk society. It begins by introducing two theoretical puzzles the project wishes to unpack: Is systemic deliberation desirable and possible in times of social crisis and uncertainty? What are the normative underpinnings of the "build back better agenda" in post-crisis reconstruction? The seminar also provides an overview of the empirical case of the Philippines two years after Haiyan -- the strongest typhoon that made landfall in recent history. Key themes from the pilot fieldwork conducted last July will be shared.
