SMART GOVERNANCE CONVERSATIONS ON DESIRABLE FUTURES
Australian governance is undergoing significant challenges. Public confidence in the capacity of government to address policy fundamentals is very low but expectations remain high. Two surveys conducted in 2016 and 2017 by the Institute for Governance and Policy Analysis (IGPA) and Ipsos suggest that a majority of Australian citizens only trust Federal Government to tackle issues of defence and national security. Moreover, the toxic cocktail of short-termism, cost containment and adversarial politics in our political system places significant constraints on the ability of our policy systems to affect meaningful change. However, there are also signs across the Canberra policy village of a growing desire to do policy differently. A drive to exploit new technologies, methods of policy creation and sources of knowledge and expertise both nationally and internationally. This provides the perfect time and space to launch a series of smart governance conversations between knowledge institutions and practitioners on desirable policy futures. Each facilitated conversation will include the latest evidence on what works translated by leading practitioners in the field. IGPA in collaboration with the Museum of Australian Democracy and Telstra have designed a series of nationally significant conversations with thought leaders on a wide range of topics from the future of indigenous policy to new ways of delivering public services to reconnecting citizens and government. We invite you to join the conversation and have your say!
