SME Governance

This project examines how Australia 's small business sector can be better catered for with a specific set of corporate governance provisions. Small corporations are a major driver of the Australian economy across a number of measures including the:

  • percentage of Gross National Product
  • number of employees
  • the number and range of businesses involved.

Australia has a complex 3 layered government system. As a result of this fact, and other social and cultural factors, there is dialogue centred on the theme of 'over-government': this has various dimensions including too much regulation, too much governance, and too much red-tape. This project has focused to date on written outputs and conference participation looking at simplifying the governance burden for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and small corporations. Conferences papers have been delivered at SEAANZ, the Small and Medium Enterprise research group and the Corporate Law Teachers Association. Research papers have been published in the Australian Business Law Review, and Keeping Good Companies, the Chartered Secretaries Australia publication.
