Research Programs
The Institute has created three broad knowledge networks which conduct research on policy, management and delivery and law and justice themes.
These are comprised of inter-disciplinary scholars and leading practitioners who undertake research that addresses systemic challenges in governance. Current clients include: the ACT government; the Australasian Institute of Justice Administration; the Australian National Audit Office; the European Union; the National Water Commission; the West Asia and North African Forum; and the World Bank.
Institute fellows are currently delivering four ARC research projects on ‘Whole of Government’ (Halligan), ‘Corporate Governance’ (Edwards, Halligan and Nicoll), ‘Social Inclusion and Exclusion among Australia’s Children’ (Daly with NATSEM), and ‘Developing a responsive regulatory system for small business corporations’ (Lewis).
Recent books include: Women and the Law in Australia (LexisNexis, 2010) by Patricia Easteal; Understanding Competition States (Routledge, 2009) and New Directions in the Study of Policy Transfer (Routledge, 2010) by Mark Evans; The Centrelink Experiment (ANU, 2009) and Performance Management in the Public Sector (Routledge, 2010) by John Halligan; and, ASEAN Regionalism: cooperation, values and institutionalisation by Chris Roberts. The Institute is also host to the international journal Policy Studies edited by Mark Evans and has published ‘The Rudd Government: Australian Commonwealth Administration 2007-2010’
The Institute’s research capacity in Australian regional policy, citizen-centric policy-making and delivery and public policy delivery has been strengthened with the appointments of three new internationally recognised scholars – Professor Linda Botterill, Professor Lawrence Pratchett and Dr Benoit Freyens.
In addition, the Institute’s research and professional development programs have been further enhanced with the adjunct appointments of Virginia Haussegger (strategic communications), Tony Preston Stanley (governance and development), and Melanie Fisher (the science-policy interface).
