Filipe is Political Science PhD Candidate at UFMG, Brazil. In his research, he intends to understand the constraints to public debate about mining activities in Minas Gerais State, Brazil, with a broad deliberative systems perspective. In his master’s thesis, he examined ways in which the dichotomy between conflict and deliberative democracy can be overcome, with an analysis of an environmental conflict in Brazil. He is interested in the relationships between deliberative democracy, social movements, conflicts and environmental issues.  He is currently a visiting PhD student at the Centre for Deliberative Democracy and Global Governance and one of the book review editors of The Journal of Deliberative Democracy (formerly Journal of Public Deliberation).
