Darielle Talarico

After a thirty-year career that spanned from being a biologist to a public participation professional, I have witnessed the effects of deliberative and participatory democracy in action in relation to issues involving First Nation land claims, protected areas, forestry, mining, and energy development in northern and Arctic regions of Canada. My experience as a facilitator forced me on a path of self-reflection as I came to recognize and gain empathy for my fellow citizens’ preferences, even when these preferences did not align with my own. I gained an ability to see problems from all sides and it is this experience that led me to want a deeper understanding of politics and hence my undertaking of an interdisciplinary PhD which focuses on deliberative democracy theory, public participation theory, and subjectivity.
