Over three decades, NATSEM’s success has built on the work of some exceptional researchers. These have included international leaders in economic microsimulation and geospatial mapping. But it is important to remember that each of them started in a school classroom learning maths. Many were inspired by statistics and modelling as an undergraduate.
NATSEM is conscious of the current challenges around student numeracy in Australia. There are also calls from education bodies for more support for maths education. At NATSEM, we are keen to give back to the emerging generation of mathematicians. Who knows, we might even contribute to the next exceptional NATSEM researcher?
Through the tabs above, we outline a range of resources that NATSEM provides to educators, professionals and students.
THE ANNUAL NATSEM INTERNSHIP
Each year, NATSEM provides the opportunity for a high school student (Year 10 and over) or an undergraduate student to take up a two-week internship with our team.
The Annual NATSEM Internship forms part of secondary and undergraduate internship programs provided by UC. This means that they can be accredited as work experience, official internships and in some cases provide credit into future university studies. To find out more about intern opportunities at UC, please email: natsem | at | canberra.edu.au
These internships are competitive and require applicants to submit:
- an official record of their previous year’s learning results.
- an application (of no more than one page) by the due date.
This application must describe a proposed project that aligns with NATSEM’s work and can be completed in two weeks. The above information will be used to identify the successful candidate and match them to a mentor from the NATSEM team.
The successful applicant will receive a $2,000 award to assist with their travel, accommodation or other expenses.
At the completion of the internship, the student’s project will be published on this site.
Due Date: APPLICATIONS FOR INTERNSHIPS ARE CLOSED UNTIL 2021.

NATSEM convenes workshops and conducts masterclasses across a range of specialist topics bringing together our experts and policy audiences. These are open to the public, but can also be designed around the needs of different government departments or organizations.
NATSEM also contributes to the Masters of Public Administration and Graduate Certificate programs within IGPA which prepare public sector leaders for today’s policy challenges.
