The three-day summer school uses a combination of plenary sessions, student presentations, and roundtable discussions.

Plenary Sessions

  1. Day 1: State of the art of deliberative democracy, delivered by Jane Suiter.
  2. Day 2: Democracy without shortcuts, a conversation between Cristina Lafont and John Dryzek.
  3. Day 3: The methodology of deliberative democracy, a discussion on how empirical research on deliberative democracy has been enriched by normative theory (tbc), quantitative analysis (Simon Niemeyer), and interpretive approaches (Carolyn Hendriks).

Student Presentations

Students will be given 20-30 minutes to present their work and will be paired with one of the speakers who will serve as their discussant. Participants must indicate whether the paper is:

  • A research proposal
  • An early draft of a dissertation chapter
  • A chapter in a dissertation
  • A draft journal article or book chapter

All paper presenters will be required to submit draft papers by 25 January 2020 to give enough time for everyone to read the paper.

Interactive sessions

Each day will end with hour-long interactive sessions where speakers and PhD students discuss emerging debates and questions based on the day’s presentations. Roundtable speakers will summarize the small group discussions in plenary.
