Open data and GovHack

GovHack is an international competition for people of all abilities who seek to make life better through open data. GovHack has since evolved to encompass the following objectives: a) To provide an opportunity through open data for government, citizens and industry to collaborate, gain knowledge and develop new skills; b) To showcase open data as a mechanism for identifying and solving deep-rooted social, economic and environmental challenges; c) To impress upon Government the economic and societal value of quality, machine- readable, standardised open data; d)To highlight the increasing value of open data as a tool to promote transparency, strengthen democracy, and develop trust. In this talk, Selva will highlight the importance of open data and how GovHack would help open data community and developers. Information of how to participate in GovHack and what participants’ benefits will also be discussed.


Selvaraaju Murugesan received the B.Eng. degree in Mechatronics Engineering (Gold medalist) from Anna University in 2004 and the M.Eng. degree from LaTrobe University, Bundoora, Australia, in 2008. He has received his Ph.D. degree in the Electronics Engineering Department, LaTrobe University on a research thesis “Wavelets design and its novel applications”. He is currently working as Director of Innovation, Data & Analytics at Transport Canberra & City Service directorate of ACT Government. He is responsible for implementation of data management practices and delivering analytics functions to the internal business units to help them achieve organisational goals. His interest are in the areas of data science, open data, and strategy
